What is Interlibrary Loan and how does it work?

Participating libraries establish agreements with one another to share materials to supplement their own collections. If UNO Library does not own the research materials you need, there is a good chance another library will be willing to lend it to you through UNO Library. To establish your Interlibrary Loan account, go to the Library’s homepage and click on “Interlibrary Loan”.

Am I eligible to use Interlibrary Loan?

    All current UNO faculty, staff and students are eligible to receive Interlibrary Loan services. Research Park employees, UNO alumni, students of other area universities and members of the general public are not eligible. Researchers who are not eligible for services at UNO should inquire about privileges at their home institution or public library.

What kinds of materials can I order through Interlibrary Loan?

The most commonly received items are scholarly books and journal articles. Audio visual materials can also be borrowed. Keep in mind that some items—particularly rare or old items—can be difficult to obtain. As a general rule we will not borrow print versions of materials which are freely available online (digitized books, online journal articles, government publications, etc).

Interlibrary Loan is intended as a support for research and instruction, not personal entertainment. Requests for personal entertainment items (pleasure reading, non-scholarly DVDs, CDs, etc.) should be directed to a local public library.

How do I know if the library already owns the item I want?

Before submitting an Interlibrary Loan request you should always check the library catalog, which can be found on the library’s home page. Make sure to do a “periodical title” search to see if the library owns the journal in which your article request is published.

How much will it cost for me to use Interlibrary Loan?

All costs for ILL are absorbed by the library. There is no charge to the user. In

How many requests can I submit at one time?

There is no limit to how many requests you may submit. If you are submitting book requests keep in mind that they are likely to come in about the same time and be due about the same time, so it is best not to request more than you think you’ll have time to read.

Can I use Interlibrary Loan instead of buying my textbooks?

Interlibrary Loan is a research support service, not a replacement for purchasing textbooks used in UNO classes. If a requested item is listed on the UNO Bookstore's current booklist it will be cancelled. Many professors will place a copy of the class text on Library Reserve if asked which can help defray textbook costs.

Can I use Interlibrary Loan if I want a paper copy of an e-book?

As a general rule, ILL staff will not request books from other libraries if UNO Library already owns an electronic copy. Exceptions are made on a case by case basis.

Can I request a physical copy of something that is freely available online?

ILL staff will not request paper copies of items that are freely available online. If a requested item can be found online ILL staff will send a link or instructions on how to find it.

How long will it take to get the materials I’ve ordered?

Processing and shipping times vary. However, most books can be obtained within about two weeks. Most articles can be obtained within about one week.

Where do I pick up my orders?

Most articles will be sent directly to your ILL account in .pdf format. (You will receive an e-mail notification to logon to your account to retrieve the document.) Articles which cannot be delivered electronically will be held at the Library Public Services Desk for pick up. Books and other returnable items can be picked up at the Library Public Services Desk. You will need your UNO ID card in order to pick up these materials. All Interlibrary Loan users must pick up their own materials except in the case of a faculty proxy.

How do I renew Interlibrary Loan materials?

Renewals should be requested through your ILL account before the due date. Overdue materials will not be renewed.

To request a renewal, logon to your ILLiad account and select “View Checked-Out Items” from the toolbar on the left. Click on the transaction number for the item you want to renew, and then click on the red “Renew Request” link at the top of the record. If the renewal request was successful you will see the new due date displayed.

What if I need an item for the whole semester or longer?

If you anticipate needing an item for longer than a 3-6 week period it is recommended that you copy or scan relevant portions of the material, or purchase the material for long term use. Lending libraries will not allow borrowers to keep their materials for extended periods, regardless of whether the material is being used to support a thesis, dissertation or published work. Repeat requests for the same material will not be honored.

What if I forget my username or password?

If you forget your Interlibrary Loan login information, send an e-mail to to have your password reset.

What happens if I don’t return my ILL materials on time?

If ILL materials are not returned by the due date you will receive e-mail notifications from the Interlibrary Loan Department. If the item is not returned within two weeks of the due date your ILLiad account will be blocked. If an item is not returned within four weeks of the due date you will be blocked from checking out UNO library books and accessing the library’s databases remotely. You will also be blocked from registering for classes and obtaining transcripts. Full privileges are restored when all overdue items are returned. The borrower is responsible for any long overdue charges assessed by the lending library.

What if I lose or damage an ILL book?

If an item belonging to another institution is lost or damaged while checked out to you, you will be responsible for all replacement or repair costs. Please contact the UNO Library ILL Department so that they can obtain a replacement invoice from the lending library. Do not purchase a replacement copy of the material unless instructed to do so.
